Timpani (Kettle Drums) Timpani is the Italian word for kettle-drums, which are tuneable drums used in the symphony orchestra. The tension of the skin membrane can be adjusted by the player, to tune each drum to a particular bass note.
Timpani or kettledrums are musical instruments in the percussion family. A type of drum categorised as a hemispherical drum, they consist of a membrane called a head stretched over a large bowl traditionally made of copper. Thus timpani are an example of kettle drums, also known as vessel drums and semispherical drums, whose body is similar to a section of a sphere whose cut conforms the head. Most modern timpani are pedal timpani .
· Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe also uses timpani to good effect in many of his works - take the Piano Concerto, Sun Music(s) I - IV, Irkanda IV, Fifth Continent, etc. & Hovhaness has a big solo for the timpani at the end of his Symphony No. 50 "Mount St Helens" where he depicts the eruption of the volcano.
